Trauma in the Paediatric Permanent Dentition: A Practical Guide to Acute Management

Learning outcomes

  1. Take a systematic trauma history and screen for associated injuries, including head and neck injury.
  2. Perform a thorough clinical and radiographic assessment
  3. Recognise and diagnose common injures in the permanent dentition including fractures, luxation injuries and avulsion
  4. Understand the appropriate immediate management, including repositioning, replantation and splinting.
  5. Give appropriate post-injury care instructions and plans for splint removal and follow-up.
  6. Recognise time-critical injuries and when and where to refer.

Dr Amanda Lin is a Specialist Paediatric dentist based in Sydney. She completed her Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) at the University of Queensland, graduating as Valedictorian, before beginning her career with Hunter New England Oral Health across various regional hospital, community health, and school dental settings.

Dr Lin undertook her specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry through the University of Sydney, based at the Westmead Centre for Oral Health and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. During this time, she was awarded the Faculty of Medicine and Health Executive Dean’s Prize for Academic Excellence, as well as the Australasian Academy of Paediatric Dentistry International Association of Dental Research Travel Research Award.

She has a strong clinical interest in the management of dental trauma, developmental dental anomalies, and supporting children to build long-term confidence within the dental home. Alongside her role at Macarthur Paediatric Dentistry, Dr Lin holds an appointment as a Consultant Paediatric Dentist at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where she is actively involved in teaching Paediatric Dental Registrars, Residents, visiting oral health therapists and dentists, and medical students. She delivers paediatric dental trauma education for Paramedicine students at Western Sydney University and Emergency Department doctors within NSW Health. She will also be lecturing for Bachelor of Oral Health students at the University of Newcastle.
