Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) affects many dental patients in Australia. Dental Sleep Medicine (DSM) presents dental practices with an amazing opportunity to provide comprehensive treatment, differentiate themselves, and add a new service to their offices. However, implementing and growing DSM also presents numerous obstacles including patient identification, sleep testing, appliance selection, medical networking, and insurance billing.
- Screen patients effectively for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) within the dental practice
- Identify the clinical signs and symptoms associated with OSA
- Evaluate and select appropriate diagnostic and testing pathways relevant to clinical practice
- Determine the indications for different therapeutic devices based on individual patient presentations
- Formulate clear, evidence-based responses to common patient questions regarding OSA assessment and management
Webinar 3: Early Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment In The Mixed Dentition
Early interceptive treatment is orthodontic treatment performed at an early age during the early mixed dentition and before the establishment of the permanent dentition. Children as early as 6 years old can exhibit significant crowding, severe dentofacial discrepancies, and facial asymmetries. Patients that present with these problems are good candidates for early orthodontic/dentofacial orthopaedic evaluation and treatment.
- Describe the objectives and rationale for early interceptive orthodontic treatment
- Identify appropriate early interceptive orthodontic treatment options based on clinical presentation
- Assess the potential functional and developmental consequences of delaying interceptive orthodontic intervention
- Recognise key dentofacial components involved in achieving optimal growth, function, and structural normalisation

Dr Derek Mahony
Dr Derek Mahony is a Specialist Orthodontist renowned for his contributions to early interceptive orthodontic treatment and airway health. With over 38 years of experience, Dr Mahony’s educational background reflects his dedication to comprehensive care in orthodontics. He earned a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Sydney and a Master of Science in Orthodontics from the University of London. His qualifications include a Diploma in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, memberships in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics from esteemed institutions, and a Fellowship in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Dentists in Canada. Dr Mahony has also completed Graduate Diplomas in Dental Sleep Medicine and Clear Aligner Therapy at the City of London Dental School, focusing on airway and craniofacial health.
Dr Mahony has built an international reputation through his clinical practice, research, and education. A dedicated researcher, he is an invited reviewer for multiple dental journals and has contributed to studies on facial development and nasal breathing. His research has highlighted the benefits of maxillary expansion in addressing systemic health issues, including bed-wetting, OSA and ADHD, showing the broader impacts of orthodontic intervention on patient health.
